'Sabrina':
WB's got 7-year itch
The magic is gone from the relationship between "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" and the WB.
Star Melissa Joan Hart said the network no longer cares about the seven-season-old series, and she's none too happy about it.
WB programmers have ordered 19 episodes this year, up from an initial buy of 13, but have not committed to a full season.
"It's a price thing," Hart told TV Guide Online, "and it's a pretty crappy way to treat a show as old as we are, but it happens."
This season, "Sabrina" is averaging 3.37 million viewers, up from 3.13 million for all of last season. However, because of the show's longevity, cast salaries are high - making it a costly production.
"I guess we have a really expensive show, and for the price of our show, the WB could put two other shows in pilots," Hart said. "They kinda just bought it to make their money. Because nobody there backs our show, nobody there is fully supporting it or putting their neck out for it."
Not so, according to a WB spokesman.
"The WB has been supportive of 'Sabrina, the Teenage Witch' since the day we acquired it," said spokesman Paul McGuire. "Promotional priorities shift from week to week and season to season at a network, and we're always looking for good comedy to highlight in our spots. 'Sabrina' remains an important show for the WB."
